Borrowing
Maine borrows only through general obligation bonds that voters approve at referendum, backed by the state's full faith and credit and sold to investors in the municipal market. Maine's tax-supported debt is among the lowest in the country. The state reported about $215 million in interest on its debt in fiscal 2024.
