Hawaiʻi HI

"The Aloha State"

The newest state in the Union and the most remote, a chain of volcanic islands rising from the deepest ocean on Earth, 2,390 miles from the nearest continent. Birthplace of a president, site of the attack that brought America into World War II, and home to a living culture older than the United States itself. No state is quite like Hawaii.

Hawaii state finances at a glance

State Debt - FY2024

$11.7 billion

Total state government debt outstanding at the close of fiscal 2024, including long-term bonds and short-term borrowing across state agencies and public universities.

Tax Revenue - FY2024

$10.6 billion

Total Hawaii state tax collections in fiscal 2024, led by the general excise (sales) tax ($4.8B) and the individual income tax ($3.3B).

Borrowing

Hawaii is among the highest per-resident borrowers because the state, not counties, funds public schools and hospitals. It issues general obligation bonds backed by its full faith and credit, plus revenue bonds, all sold to investors in the municipal bond market. The state reported about $132 million in interest on its debt in fiscal 2024.
